When I first started employing people, I made a mistake.

I thought because I talked to them all day, I didn't need to have meetings with them.

There was Catherine and me.

We talked.

Why would we need a 1:1?

Then there were three of us.

Then four.

And somewhere along the way I realised:

I'm employing all these people and I'm STILL doing everything I was doing before.

I hadn't made time for my actual job.

BUILDING, NURTURING AND MOTIVATING MY TEAM.

That's what Chapter 6 of The Naked Salon is all about.

And one of the most powerful tools I've found for doing that is ridiculously simple:

A weekly 1:1.

Not a meeting because somebody's in trouble.

Not:

“Can I have a word with you?”

And they immediately think:

“Oh shit. What have I done?”

A regular conversation.

Sit down.

Shut up.

And LISTEN.

Because when you give somebody 15 or 20 uninterrupted minutes, things start falling out.

What they're struggling with.

What they love.

What they hate.

What they want to learn.

Where they're going.

What they're thinking about changing.

And sometimes even whether they're planning on leaving.

I used to call these meetings my little $3.80 insurance policy — slightly more if you wanted almond milk. Chapter 6 Building, nurturing a…

In this chapter, I also take you through three of my essential tools for building a great team:

Team meetings.
1:1 meetings.
PAT, SMACK, PAT.

Praise.

Talk honestly about what needs improving.

Praise again.

Because sarcasm isn't feedback.

Avoidance isn't leadership.

And hoping something fixes itself isn't a strategy.

One of the biggest shifts is understanding that your team needs feedback, attention and connection BEFORE there's a problem.

The chapter also introduces four areas I use to understand performance:

Skill.
Attitude.
Team.
Neglect.

Instead of immediately telling someone what's wrong, get them involved in identifying where they need help and what they're prepared to do about it.

Then they start owning the solution. Chapter 6 Building, nurturing a…

And here's where this connects to something much bigger.

If you're doing 40+ client-facing hours every week, WHEN are you supposed to do this?

When are you going to have the 1:1s?

When are you going to train?

When are you going to listen?

When are you going to develop your next leader?

That's why my 25-Hour Salon Rule isn't simply about working fewer hours.

It's about shifting your hours.

Less time personally servicing clients.

More time building the people who can look after them.

I'm opening 5 spots this month in my 25-Hour Salon Rule 90-Day Program.

It's for owners of salons, spas and clinics with a team of four or more who want to become less necessary in the day-to-day running of their business.

If that sounds like you, take a look.

No big song and dance.

Just see if we're a good fit.
